In each mission, you must succeed in minor goals like killing the generals of the opposition, escorting sappers to blow up enemy siege weaponry and preventing the enemy from making to behind your borders. The game has a fast-paced, arcade-like, mission-based gameplay. Use ultra-violent special attacks to mow down entire groups of foes at once, with ridiculously bloody effect. Play as a mighty Spartan trooper, and battle through hordes of enemies in large environments, while working with allies. Stay tuned for more on Spartan: Total Warrior. An action game spin-off in the Total Warrior series. While still needing a little polish, the action feels satisfying and thankfully doesn't rely on simple button mashing. In summary, Total Warrior looks to deliver an epic, action-focused experience that shoudn't disappoint. Thankfully, though, slaughtering people in the name of Sparta never seemed to disappoint. Regardless of what we had to do, killing approximately 300 Romans always seemed to play a pivotal role. Of course, hacking people is always a part of the mix. Instead of focusing on the death of enemy soldiers exclusively, we found ourselves protecting structures and friendly characters, destroying enemy weapon placements and even sneaking into enemy camps. We also liked the array of mission objectives available in each chapter. And since archers hang out around the back of the fight, we had to cut through dozens of their frontline buddies to kill them. Each arrow that hit us took a lot of health. The only thing we had a slight issue with was the archers. Make no mistake, survival is near impossible without managing supplies (arrows, health, and magic) and keeping a close eye on the environment. Sounds stupid, no doubt, but our first reaction when seeing Total Warrior in action left no room for blocking or advanced defensive strategies. Survival is difficult without managing offensive and defensive capabilities. See, Total Warrior may look like a simple button masher, but it's really not. This resulted in many cases of premature death. Our first reaction when charging into battle was one of blindly slashing at anything that moved. Not surprisingly, the action in Total Warrior feels chaotic at first. Combined, however, these three basic commands result in a roster of moves including aerial attacks, dashes, fatalities, and combo techniques. There are two action commands (slash and sweep) and a block button. As described in an earlier preview, combat in Total Warrior uses a simple control scheme. Fortunately, this aspect of the game looks and plays well at this point. Still, the bulk of the game deals with the relentless butchering of Roman soldiers with a basic sword and shield. A tour through the entire game reveals most levels contain a series of such weapons, and thankfully, using them is just as cool as the fact that they're even there. Usually, we had to slay dozens of Roman soldiers before getting anywhere near some of these weapons, but we quickly discovered that once vacant we could hop on and use them ourselves. The mission, while straightforward, featured several encounters brimming with funky weapons such as automatic cannons which launched explosive arrows. In another sequence, where we snuck into a Roman camp to retrieve the Twin Blades of Athena, we faced more of fantasy-meets-history type weaponry. It helps make the encounter, which concludes the first chapter of the game, feel that much more dynamic. It doesn't hurt that groups of friendly soldiers become petrified during the course of the battle. Running around the battlefield killing enemy soldiers while dodging the machine's beam is damn fun. The Romans constructed the weapon by capturing Medusa and strapping her into a giant machine designed to amplify and focus her deadly stare. In one example, which takes place early in the game, the Roman army deploys a beam weapon capable of freezing dozens of soldiers. It actually makes for some really cool sequences. The mix of fantasy and gritty realism does more than lend Total Warrior a unique look. Plus, Roman legionaries and centurions fight alongside skeletons, ghosts and all manner of fantastical beasts. So while the game includes historically accurate weapons and architecture, it also boasts flamethrowers and magical armor. Set during an alternate past, Total Warrior's distinctive backstory blends history, mythology and science fiction. For those who don't know, Total Warrior blends the epic scope of Rome: Total War with the fast-paced action of the Dynasty Warriors series. We spent several hours tearing through Roman hordes in the latest build and walked away from the experience impressed. And that is precisely what Creative Assembly set out to do. Even without the spit and polish, though, Total Warrior looks to deliver an action-focused epic.
